Community of Data Science Learners

Learning and Teaching Data Science in Southern California and Beyond

Where to Start

Here are some things you can do to get started:

:speaking_head: Introduce yourself by adding your picture and information about yourself and your interests to your profile.

:open_book: Get to know the community by browsing discussions that are already happening here. When you find a post interesting, informative, or entertaining, use the  to show your appreciation or support!

:handshake: Contribute by commenting, sharing your own perspective, asking questions, or offering feedback in the discussion.

How to Contribute

This community does not exist without your contributions! Before replying or starting new topics, please review the Community Guidelines.

Share Your Experiences

In the In the Classroom category, we have set up four general topics for you to reflect on your experiences teaching and learning data science: in a college-level course specifically for data science, in a college-level course other than data science, in the K-12 classroom, and outside a traditional classroom (e.g., professional development workshop or community outreach). Please share some of your reflections about teaching and learning data science in these environments with our community!

Continue the Discussion

To reply to a post, click the “Reply” button at the bottom of the post you wish to reply to, write your post in the text box that pops up, preview your post on the right side of the text box as you write it, and click the blue “Reply” button when you are happy with what your post looks like.

Tag Your Posts

Above your text box is a box marked “optional tags.” Tags are used to further highlight the subjects of your post and make it easier for people interested in those subjects to find and reply to your post. You can add as many tags as you want to your post; please keep them short (one or two words/abbreviations) to make it easier for other people to remember and reuse them.

We highly recommend that you tag your post with the domain(s) or application area(s) your post concerns, for example, biology or business. This will help people that teach, learn, and do data science in that area to find posts that are most relevant to them.

Create New Topics

If you have a question that you would like the community’s perspective on, or would like to start a new discussion centered around a specific topic, you should first check if there are any active topics carrying on that discussion. If you don’t find one, please create a new topic.

To create a new topic, first click on the Category your post belongs in (e.g., General, In the Classroom, etc.). Then click the “New Topic” button, come up with a title for your topic, and write and preview the first post in the topic. When you’re done writing the post, click the blue “Create Topic” button at the bottom of the text box.

If you accidentally clicked on the wrong category before creating your topic, that’s okay; simply select the correct category from the dropdown menu above your text box.
